Hello all! Today is my stop on the Bookstagram to Hello all! Today is my stop on the Bookstagram tour for #TheFinalGirlsSupportGroup! I haven't had a chance to read this yet but it sounds incredible and I cannot wait to dive in! Here is a very intense extract from the book; “Group is the only time I leave this apartment except to go to the mailbox place across the street once a week, to check my escape routes once a month, and my biweekly trips to the corner store for supplies. I don’t like risk. My hair is short because long hair can get grabbed. I wear running shoes in case I have to move. I don’t wear loose clothing. I inventory my pockets: keys, money, phone, weapons. I stopped carrying a firearm on public transport after an incident a couple of years back, but I have pepper spray, a box cutter in my right front pocket, and a razor blade taped to my left ankle. Pandemic plus mental health plus potential new disability has done a full number on me the last few months. I'm not fully back yet but I do know I owe some Bookstagram tour posts so hopefully will post these over the next few weeks! First of these is FELIX EVER AFTER BY KACEN CALLENDER. I was lucky enough to read this last year and I absolutely ADORED it. As someone who was just re-discoverinf their own gender identity, reading the journey that Felix goes through was overwhelming but in a good way. I finished the book feeling valid, loved and knew that I had just finished an incredible book that deserves so many high praises. She's written a great guest post for you all. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 📖📖⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While #TheBoyIAm has undergone over seven years of work, the character of Jude was always fully formed from the day his name arrived in my head, the same day he arrived on the page. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There are so many things about him that have never changed even before the moment he properly introduced himself to me with what’s now the first sentence of the book, ‘My name is Jude Grant, and I am alive’. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The five things that I love about him the most have always been there, even if it took me some time to find them.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In High House boys are often competing with each other, so when Jude finds his first friend he’ll do anything, and go anywhere for him. Jude was so tenacious he kept on taking up more and more chapters, insisting I tell his story. I fought hard to disagree with him, but it wasn’t going to happen. So, don’t expect him to give up. Ever. Time to go to acting class. With my hips swinging like this and like that, I am walking past the guava seller. “Brother,” I am calling, “what’s the time?” “Eight thirty,” he is grumbling, because he is not wishing to share with me the fruits of his wristwatch. Leave him. I am abandoning my stylish walk and running like a horse to the local railway station. On the train, while I am touching my chest and forehead, saying a prayer for those poor people who were dying a few days ago at this very station— “Who is pushing?” one aunty is shouting. “Stop it!” “This hijra couldn’t find a different compartment to hassle?” the peanut seller is hissing, as if I am not having ears. Nothing is simple for a person like me, not even one hour on the train. My chest is a man’s chest, and my breasts are made of rags. So what? Find me another woman in this whole city as truly woman as me. In the middle of this crowd a legless beggar is coming down the corridor, sitting on a wheeled plank of wood which he is rolling on everybody’s feet. “Give me one coin,” he is whining. People are yelling at him. “Now you need to pass?” “No eyes or what?” “Where will I stand, on your head?” Now he is also shouting back, “Let me cut off your legs, then you see how you manage!” It is true to god making me laugh and laugh. This is why I am liking the local trains. You can be burning one train, but you cannot be stopping our will to go to work, to class, to family if we have them. Every local train is like a film. On the train, I am observing faces, body movements, voices, fights. This is how people like me are learning.
