The old millennium turns into the new.

In the same hospital, two very different women give birth to two very similar daughters.

Hope leaves with a beautiful baby girl.

Anna leaves with empty arms.

Seventeen years later, the gods who keep watch over broken-hearted mothers wreak mighty revenge, and the truth starts rolling, terrible and deep, toward them all.

The power of mother-love will be tested to its limits.

Perhaps beyond . . .

Because Of You is Dawn French’s stunning new novel, told with her signature humour, warmth and so much love.

My Review

*Trigger Warning: Still Birth, Abduction, Suicide*

Because of You is an intricate story that will take you on an emotional journey. I felt so many things during this story and you can tell that Dawn French has done a brilliant job at creating a gut-wrenching story that will have you deliberating over the true villains of the piece. It’s a book that makes you consider the gray areas of life, the places where moral and reason go out of the window – but is it really for the best? I thought that was one of the most interesting things about this book for sure.

Alongside a very intriguing plot, Dawn French has also created some wonderful characters. I absolutely loved Minnie and Lee. I thought they were brilliant additions to the story and I could really feel them walking off the page. I have conflicted emotions about Hope but I think I did really come to love her. I also really adored Isaac. I thought that Anna was also such a loving character with a lot of depth that I felt came across really well in the book. The only character I didn’t like was Julius but this was absolutely supposed to happen as he was set out to be a bit of a horrid character from the offset.

As I listened to the audiobook, I thought it would be good to talk a little about the narration. It was narrated by Dawn French herself and I think this worked really well. As an author, she was aware of how she wanted the book to come across so made sure that she emphasized the right moments this way. I found her voice to be easy to listen to and felt that she did a good job of differentiating between the different characters as well.

All in all, this was an interesting read that I very much enjoyed. I would absolutely recommend it and it will definitely take you on an emotional ride while also leaving you to have a good long think about things.
